HP Pavilion DV7-6101sa Review

Posted by Edo Suseno Tuesday, November 1, 2011 0 komentar
Despite their budget prices, HP's Pavilion laptops are stylish, thanks to a clean design and tough aluminium construction. The DV7-6101sa is no different – the 17in chassis isn’t exactly compact, but its sleek appearance gives the impression of a much more expensive product.

HP Pavilion DV7-6101sa
Considering its size, we were happy with the decent range of connectivity options; as well as an internal DVD re-writer, the DV7 also includes two USB ports, a USB3 connector, VGA and HDMI video outputs, three 3.5mm audio jacks and a multi-format memory card reader.
HP Pavilion DV7-6101sa left
Underneath the textured metal lid, a black keyboard with large keys and a dedicated numeric keypad contrasts nicely with the silver chassis. The keys are well spaced and have pleasant springy actions. By default, the function keys are shortcuts to multimedia functions such as media playback and volume, but if you don't want to have to hold down the 'Fn' key to access keys F1 to F12 you can change the option in the laptop's BIOS. The touchpad buttons were better than those on previous Pavilion laptops, as they were firm yet responsive in everyday use.
HP Pavilion DV7-6101sa keyboard
The DV7's display has a glossy finish, which can reflect light sources and make the laptop hard to use in a brightly-lit room, but a very bright backlight and plenty of screen tilt go a long way towards compensating for the reflections and the screen's fairly narrow viewing angles. The DV7's screen also has a fairly high 1,600x900 resolution, which makes it easy to work on two documents at once or watch 720p video content.
HP Pavilion DV7-6101sa right
The DV7's 1TB hard disk and great screen make it a good multimedia laptop, but the Beats Audio-branded speakers were a disappointment. There was definite distortion at full volume, although at lower levels we could listen to MP3s and streaming internet radio happily. There was even some bass, although you’ll still need to connect a set of dedicated speakers if you want to fill a room with sound.

HP Pavilion dv6t Review

Posted by The Best Review Tuesday, October 18, 2011 0 komentar

It's always showtime with the HP Pavilion dv6t. Powered by a second-generation Intel Core i5 CPU with 6GB of RAM, a 640GB 7,200-rpm hard drive, and switchable AMD graphics, this 15.6-inch laptop can seamlessly stream HD video, play your favorite games and music, and look good doing it. A bright glossy display and the addition of Beats Audio make for a great entertainment experience.

Design

Drawing its inspiration from modern-day sports cars, the dark umber HP Pavilion dv6t has an understated elegance. The brushed-aluminum lid really draws you in, especially the nice little swoop towards the hinge. The sides of the laptop are wrapped in gray matte aluminum, while the base is made of black plastic. Our only complaint is that the dv6t picks up fingerprints.
HP Pavilion dv6t back view
The deck of the Pavilion dv6t has the same rich dark umber finish as the lid, set off by a thin silver speaker panel located above the keyboard, which is nestled between the aluminum hinges. The silver power button and black web browser button sit below the speakers on the left side of the deck. The front lip of the laptop also houses two additional speakers for added audio quality.
At 14.8 x 9.7 x 1.2-1.3 inches, the Pavilion dv6t is slightly smaller and slimmer than the 15.2 x 10.2 x 1.4-inch ASUS K53E, making it easier to slip into a backpack. However both machines weigh in at 5.8 pounds, which means you'll likely use this notebook mostly at home.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Pavilion dv6t's black matte island-style keyboard sits in a glossy black keyboard panel that shows off the generous spacing between the keys. We experienced firm feedback from the large, flat keys without any flex. The palm rest was comfortable and large enough so that we were able to rest our entire wrists on it. Taking cues from its consumers, HP has set the function keys as Direct Action keys, so you don't have to press the Fn key to adjust screen brightness or volume, for example.
HP Pavilion dv6t keyboard
The 3.7 x 2.1-inch touchpad gave us plenty of room to move our fingers, and we liked how it's bordered by a bluish-white backlight. Multitouch gestures such as two-finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom were easy to use on the smooth, friction-free surface. Two-finger rotation, three-finger press, and flick are also available, but they must be enabled in the Control Panel.

Fingerprint Reader

The Pavilion dv6t features a fingerprint reader, a feature normally reserved for business notebooks; this gives users the ability to swipe a finger in lieu of keying in their passwords. After being prompted to swipe our fingers several times, we were able to access our Facebook account with a single swipe of a finger. We then did the same for our e-mail, Twitter, and Flickr accounts. HP SimplePass can also generate one-time passwords for financial sites such as PayPal. Users can even use the reader to register multiple users, each gaining access using a finger swipe.

Heat

After we streamed 15 minutes of video from Hulu at full screen, the dv6t's touchpad measured a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The space between the G and H keys was a little warmer, at 92 degrees. The underside of the laptop registered 99 degrees, which is above what we consider uncomfortable (95 degrees), but is typical for a notebook bottom. The hottest point of the dv6t, on the bottom by the vent, registered a somewhat troubling 107 degrees.
While the initial temperatures were a mixed bag, HP's CoolSense utility helped cool things off a bit. Using the laptop's accelerometer, CoolSense detects the subtle movement of a notebook on a user's lap and turns on the fan to maintain a comfortable temperature via three settings (Coolest, Performance Optimized, and Quietest). The dv6t kept things nice and cool on the Coolest setting with noticeable--but not distracting--fan noise.

HP Pavilion dv6t open display viewDisplay and Audio

Watching video on the dv6t's glossy, 15.6-inch HP BrightView LED Display was a blast. The 1366 x 768 panel is bright with vivid color. Optimus Prime's red and blue chassis gleamed and explosions were fiery during the Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailer. Brilliant white and yellow sparks flew during fight scenes and blacks were deep and rich with minimal pixelation. The dv6's wide 120-degree viewing angles meant that three people sitting side by side could comfortably watch the action.
Featuring four speakers and Beats Audio software (pictured), the dv6t offers impressive music playback. Whether it was a bass-heavy track such as "Bad Intentions" by Dr. Dre or something more ethereal such as Evanescence's "My Immortal," the sound was crystal clear and full, easily filling a small room. However, Dell XPS 15's much larger JBL speakers produced even better audio.
HP Pavilion dv6t Beats software
Using headphones with the dv6t, we were able to hear even the minutest details, including distinct background vocals in songs we had heard many times before without noticing them. Videos on CNN.com initially sounded flat, but audio improved when we switched the sound settings from Music to Voice in the Beats Audio control panel. Switching to Movie mode as we watched "28 Days Later" gave us that extra jump-out-of-your-seat scare factor.

The Best HP Pavilion g4 Review

Posted by The Best Review Monday, October 17, 2011 2 komentar

The HP Pavilion g4's $379 price will make your eyes pop. Available exclusively through Best Buy, the AMD A4-3300M-powered laptop doesn't have the specs of a high performer, but at this price point, shoppers are looking for a competent system for web surfing, light media consumption, and e-mail. Fortunately, with strong audio, wide viewing angles, and a comfy keyboard, the Pavilion g4 is a lot more than just competent.

Design

The Pavilion g4 has a simple, understated design--it doesn't have any interesting embellishments aside from a slightly raised HP logo on the bottom corner of the lid. Our unit was a nondescript charcoal gray, although HP does offer the laptop in other shades (Pearl Pink, Pewter, and Sonoma Red) for $25 more. Despite being made from plastic, the g4's glossy lid feels sturdy, but it's a fingerprint magnet.
HP Pavilion g4
Open up the notebook, and you'll find the same glossy gray finish on the lid. Both the screen and the deck are framed in black, though the screen is bordered with a black matte plastic.
Weighing in at 4.6 pounds and measuring 13.4 x 9.1 x 1.2-1.4 inches, the Pavilion g4 has just about the right heft for a machine of this size. (For comparison's sake, the 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad V470--measuring 13.4 x 9.2 x 1.2 inches--has exactly the same weight.) This laptop is definitely convenient for travel; we slipped the Pavilion g4 in our bag, took it out on a subway commute, and weren't bothered in the least by its weight.

Heat

The Pavilion g4 is one cool laptop, and it remained so throughout our testing. After we ran our heat test (which involves streaming a full-screen Hulu video for 15 minutes), the touchpad measured only 78 degrees Fahrenheit, the keyboard 84 degrees, and the middle bottom only 90 degrees. We generally consider temperatures less than 95 degrees to be comfortable, so we were pleased to discover that the Pavilion g4 stayed well within this range. However, when did a lot of work on it--specifically, browsing the web, running a full antivirus scan and streaming a video on Netflix at the same time--the laptop's fan began to whir audibly.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Pavilion g4's keyboard isn't quite island-style, but each of the flat, black keys has a raised squarish top, and the layout is evenly spaced. The keyboard sits in a recessed well on the deck of the laptop, and typing on it was a largely pleasant experience. There was plenty of satisfying tactile feedback and very little flex, and all the keys were within easy reach of our fingers. HP reversed the primary functions of the function row so that one key press gives you quick access to the laptop's volume, brightness, and multimedia controls (rewind, play/pause, forward). It's a welcome change.
HP Pavilion g4 Keyboard
The textured surface of the Pavilion g4's 3.3 x 1.7-inch touchpad provided us with enough satisfying friction to move the cursor accurately. Better still, the pad handles a variety of multitouch gestures with great aplomb, as everything from pinch-to-zoom to three-finger swipe worked smoothly, though more advanced gestures had to be enabled in the touchpad software. We were even able to configure three-finger tap to launch the browser.
HP also added in a nice touch: A dimple on the upper-left corner of the pad toggles gestures on and off with a double tap. However, since the touchpad isn't centered below the G and H keys like it is on most laptops, switching between touch typing and navigating with the cursor was a hassle. Also, while the large buttons right below the trackpad had good tactile feedback, they felt a little stiff.

Display and Audio

The Pavilion G4 features a 14-inch LED-backlit display with a standard resolution of 1366 x 768. It displayed pictures and video brightly, but in terms of contrast, the quality left much to be desired. When we streamed a 1080p trailer for Footloose, the drama of the underground dance event was lost because the display's brightness turned the black of the night into a muddy gray, as though the teenagers were living it up at six in the afternoon. Additionally, when we popped in a DVD of She's the Man, we noted that the bright reds of the players' uniforms appeared washed out when they should have popped against the green grass on that clear, sunny day.
HP Pavilion g4
Though its colors were dull, the display's viewing angles were extremely wide. At even 90 degrees to the left or right, colors did not wash out. However, because the panel is glossy and not particularly bright, we saw a lot of reflections when the g4 was in areas with overhead light.
Beats Audio technology hasn't trickled down to HP's bargain line yet, but the g4's Altec Lansing stereo speakers (located on the front lip of the notebook) and premium audio by SRS Labs provide loud, accurate audio that's outstanding for a system this price. The Premium Sound utility also allows you to adjust the treble and bass to get the best possible experience.
Listening to "Double Bass" by Gorillaz, we could hear a clear separation between instruments and both bass and trouble were clear. On the R&B classic "Forget Me Nots," the bass twang, vocals, and keyboards provided a rich bright side. At max volume, the audio level was loud enough to fill a large room.

Ports and Webcam

Most of the g4's ports reside on the left. These include a VGA connector, Ethernet, an HDMI port, SD card reader, two USB ports, and headphone and mic jacks. The right side houses an additional USB port, a Kensington security slot, and a SuperMulti Drive for burning and playing DVDs and CDs.
HP Pavilion g4 Ports 1
HP Pavilion g4 Ports 1
The Pavilion g4 is outfitted with a rather ordinary 0.3-megapixel webcam, which has the ability to capture both stills and video. When we tested the camera--using both natural sunlight by the window and the fluorescent lights of our office--pictures came out grainy and lacked detail. When we hopped on a Skype call, our friend reported receiving an undistorted picture (without any motion blur) and good sound, though commented that neither had outstanding quality.

Performance

With a 1.9-GHz AMD Dual-Core A4-3300M APU and 4GB of RAM, the HP Pavilion g4 won't blow anyone away with its performance, though it has enough power to handle quotidian computing tasks as long as you don't perform too many of them at once. When we opened 10 tabs on Internet Explorer, ran a full system scan on the Norton Internet Security software, and streamed video on Netflix, we observed a noticeable lag, particularly with the Netflix video, whose frames stuttered under the weight of numerous other tasks. However, Netflix played just fine by itself.

HP ProBook 5330m Review

Posted by The Best Review 0 komentar
The HP ProBook 5330m is what we called a good-performing, stylish business notebook with excellent durability in our review. For a very reasonable price, the 5330m is equipped with a second-generation Intel dual-core processor, 4GB of memory at 1333MHz, a spacious 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, and has a backlit keyboard. We found a model on HP's website for $100 less than our review unit; the only differences between the two are the processor and included battery.

In our review of the HP ProBook 5330m, we said it has a build and design similar to the 13-inch MacBook Pro and business features similar to the HPEliteBook line of notebooks. The 13.3-inch 5330m is less than one inch thin and has a brushed aluminum chassis to add to its overall durability. Up until the release of this notebook, the ProBooks had inferior durability due to their price when compared to the EliteBook lineup, but the 5330m doesn't compromise. It also has a backlit Chiclet-style keyboard with textured keys.

The sale unit comes equipped with an Intel Core i3-2310M dual-core processor at 2.1GHz, Intel HD graphics, and 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 memory. Even though that's a different processor than the one in our review unit, the sale system would have similar benchmark results as our review unit. We said our review unit performed as good or better in most of its tests as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1, another 13-inch business notebook.

More Specifications:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Mobile Intel QM67 chipset
Display: LED-backlit HD anti-glare (1366 x 768 resolution)

4-cell (41WHr) polymer battery

Be sure to check out our review of the ProBook 5330m. We've written extensively on its qualifications as a business notebook -- not to mention we've included several photos and comparison charts. Source

HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition Review

Posted by The Best Review Sunday, October 16, 2011 0 komentar
The HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition (dv6t-SE for short) is the configurable alternative to the flock of similar looking Pavilion laptops we've reviewed in recent months. Its AMD discrete graphics chipset and Intel Core i5 processor is a powerful combination when it comes to media creation and playing mid-range 3D games. Its six-hour battery life will make it a good companion on road trips. Plus it includes premium features like WiDi 2.0 and Beats Audio, something you might not expect at this $859.99 price.

Design
The dv6t-SE has a brushed aluminum finish, with a rough grain running vertically down the lid and palm rest. Our review unit has a rich umber color, but steel gray is also available. The aluminum construction is sturdy; there's no sign of flexing in the chassis, as seen with designs that rely on plastic construction. The dv6t-SE isn't the lightest or thinnest 15-inch laptop on the market; it measures 1.4 by 14.9 by 9.7 inches (HWD) and weighs in at 5.6 pounds. The Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999 direct, 4 stars) weighs 5.5 pounds and measures only 1 inch thick. It's the dv6t-SE's raised lip along the back edge of the lid that adds to its thickness.

The 15.6-inch widescreen display provides enough space for multitasking with side-by-side windows. The screen has a standard 1,366 by 768 resolution, but for an extra $150 you can upgrade to a 1,920 by 1,080 display. The dv6t-SE also comes standard with Beats Audio, HP's sound enhancement package. Compared with the audio found on most laptops, the sound quality was more consistent at higher volumes, and the bass is as good as you can get without an integrated subwoofer.

The Pavilion features HP's reliable and comfortable chiclet keyboard, with black matte keys and a contoured palm rest. Adjacent to the keyboard is a numeric keypad, and the keys are well-spaced, allowing you to comfortably type for long periods of time. It's similar to the keyboard found on the Dell Inspiron i15RN5110-7126DBK ($729.99 list, 4 stars), but the keys on the Pavilion have more squared corners and a lower key height. Just below the keyboard is a multitouch trackpad, and while the mouse buttons aren't as soft and quiet as those found on the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft), they aren't overly loud or stiff either.

Features
The dv6t-SE comes equipped with an assortment of features including, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a media card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro), a VGA connection for an external monitor or projector, Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi. While these features are fairly standard, you'll also find that you get a few special features as well, like dual headphone jacks, and an HDMI output to connect to an external monitor or HDTV. There's also WiDi 2.0, an Intel wireless technology that streams 1080p content to an HDTV, through, a Netgear Push2TV adapter (a separate $99 purchase).
The dv6t-SE's 640GB 7,200rpm hard drive is larger than the 500GB drive found in either the Samsung SF511-A02US ($729.99 list, 3.5) or the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft), and faster than the 5,400rpm drive on the Dell i15RN5110-7126DBK. Our review unit came with a dual-layer DVD +/- RW optical drive, similar to the drives seen in the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 ($799.99 direct, 3.5 stars) and Samsung SF511.
On the hard drive, you'll find a few programs come pre-installed, but not as many as you'll find on store-bought systems. A starter version of Microsoft Office 2011 and a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security come standard, but you can pick up full versions of both while adjusting the specs of your custom configuration. HP also includes a few sample games from WildTangent, but that's the extent of the pre-installed software. Hewlett-Packard offers a one-year warranty standard with every purchased unit, but HP also offers two- and three-year extended care plans with house call service and accidental damage coverage for $229.99 and $329.99 respectively.
